George Carlin actually changed my life. His routine about the housing cycle really changed my compulsion to buy stupid crap I'll never use. Still hasn't helped me get rid of a bunch of crap. Maybe I need a bigger house...

As an old hippie, I always loved Carlin's humor. And I had just started working in radio in NYC when the "Seven Words" controversy happened - I knew some of the people at WBAI, the radio station that played the routine on the air. (They are an independent, listener-sponsored station that is known for constantly pushing the limits, politically and otherwise.)

He did so many things besides the "Seven Words", though... "why do we drive on the parkway and park in the driveway?", and "ever hear of just one smithereen?", and "Al Sleet, your hippie-dippy weatherman. The forecast for tonight: Dark, gradually getting lighter till morning." Dammit, George, why did you have to go and die? That wasn't funny!
