Triumph! Man VS. Kitchen
At last it is finished... well all except the painting, no point in painting until I've finished all the work that's going to kick up sawdust.

I now have a fully functional kitchen. I love it. All furniture and cabinetry with the exception of the two antique chairs and the antique cedar counter the sink is in was built by me.

Wait until I get the new bathroom finished. The current one is absolutely frightening (looks like something out of a Turkish prison).

Wow! That's really cool. You may inspire me to build the desk in my office that I've been planning for a few months. (Mostly I haven't done it yet due to lack of time. Also I know that once I start it I have to finish it before I get my computers back!)

Are the microwave and toaster oven really as high up as they seem to be?

The woodwork is gorgeous. What color are you going to paint the walls?

They're eye level for me so I can reach them very easily. Anyone shorter than me (6'2") might have trouble. The kitchen floor is elevated about 10 inches higher than the rest of the house and I was standing in the main room to take the photo so it makes things look higher than they are.

That's what confused me - the raised floor isn't apparent in the photo. (And I guess that anyone who stays the night, and wants to cook breakfast for you, has to be as tall as you are to reach the equipment - are there any tall lesbians hanging out at the bar?)

Oh and the walls are done with a distressed plaster technique so I'm going to paint the walls white and then rub in a mustard glaze to emphasize the imperfections in the distressed plaster.

Oh, that'll be stunning with the antique-looking woodwork! Very cozy and "grandma's kitchen"-ish! Now all you need is some yellow calico curtains ;-)

Oh dear, if the plaster is distressed, maybe you need to share your meds with it?

Hm... Yellow? Right now I need to go and re-read The Yellow Wallpaper. http://www.library.csi.cuny.edu/dept/history/lavender/wallpaper.html

p.s. Very nice looking, have fun with the rest of the house. Is the bathroom next?

Oh! that would be nice, yellow is one of my favourite colours for a kitchen since the one in my childhood home was yellow. Mind you, it was way too much yellow... stained yellow wood, yellow coutners, yellow and white curtains... yellow stove, yellow fridge... way too much yellow.

I think yellow onteh walls would be nice though. (I would have suggested soemthing green or sage because I love green... and due to the glass in the door to the right, but I'm a green-addict) Have you considered a little blue here and there to off-set things? Perhaps a mix of yellow and blue in the flatware?

The glass is the door is actually covered in painters masking tape. When it's finished it'll be done in stained glass.

You've done beautiful work here!! very professional looking. I wish we could get together and make wooden stuff. I love the door on the cabinet. What kind of wood is that? and what varnish did you use? how did you apply it?

The tall locker cabinet door is made out of 2x12 construction grade spruce. The stain used on all the cabinets and table is puritan pine. It's my favorite stain as it doesn't overpower the natural colour of the wood you're working with. It basically takes whatever you're working with and makes it more. It's like the MSG of wood stains. Then I just used an oil-based varnish on all applied with a brush.

I love the antique wood look so much I want to eat it. Fortunately, one of my uncle's hobbies is to to old style woodworking without nails, so that every once in a while for christmas I get a nice little piece. Nothing like having a whole kitchen full.

I think you can safely be satisfied that you're one of those bi people who has more then half of the gay designing ability. GO TEAM BI!

Unca Ghastly, I love the kitchen- great job! The only thing is that apparently the little oven and microwave weren't meant for the vertically incline such as myself. Also, that's a great window view! I'll be blocking that with a shrubbery soon enough.
