The Daz Studio works great. I haven't played with Bryce yet (landscape software), and Hexagon is very nice but buggy as hell (if it would work like it's supposed to it would be an amazing modelling program). Much easier all in all than working with Maya which some of you may remember I worked with briefly when I had a job as an art monkey making 3D props.
Much more fun working with figures than props I can tell you.
I created a couple of my own body morph models. An Ogre set and a Gnome set.
